Project history: All three ships ordered under 1913 programme. The first two of the trio were begun in 1913 and completed in 1916, the third ship was completed after the war to a modified plan (she was planned as an experimental ship). These ships were enlarged versions of the 800 tonners design fitted with tripod masts. Armament of Enseigne Roux class was the same as fitted on earlier ships and was augmented during the war with one 75mm AA gun, ten DC of Guiraud type and Pinocchio towed AS torpedo. On trials they reached 30-31kts.

Experimental destroyer Enseigne Gabolde was suspended on the slip after the outbreak of war. She was to be fitted with Parsons geared turbines for greater economy. Her building was resumed only shortly before the end of the war and finished in 1923 to a modified design taking into account the lessons of the war. During the war the ex-Argentine Opiniâtre and Téméraire were fitted with her 4 boilers. She carried 4 funnels (rear pair were shorter than those forward) and had a larger bridge; the forward guns were superimposed (which proved an unsatisfactory arrangement because of the ship's small size). She developed 26,000shp and reached over 33kts on trials.

Modernizations: 1916 - 1918, both completed: + 1 x 1 - 75/35 M1897, 2 DCR (10), Pinocchio towed AS torpedo

Naval service: No significant events.
