Project history: Durandal and Hallebarde were designed by Normand and ordered on 25.8.1896 as prototypes of the 300 ton contre-torpilleur. They had a turtleback forecastle and a flying deck aft, with two masts and two funnels separated by the machinery. Fauconneau and Espingole differed by having a stronger hull and a slightly raised bow. The boilers in this class were long and difficult to fire.
Modernizations: 1908, all survived: mainmast was removed
1915, some survived: - 2 x 1 - 47/40; + 2 x 1 - 47/40 M1885 AA
1916, some survived: - 1 x 1 - 65/50; + 1 x 1 - 75/35 M1897, 1 DCT (6 - 12 DC)
1917, some survived: + 1 x 1 - 8.80
