Project history: The Normand boats were ordered on 9.8.1884, the Claparède and Loire vessels on 23.2.1885. Designed by Normand on the basis of the TB Poti they had built for Russia, the plans were reluctantly released to the other builders on the orders of the Ministry of the Marine. At service displacement the Normand boats could reach 19kts and the Loire boats about 18.7kts, but the Claparède vessels could only manage 18.25kts. Experience proved that they were too small for fleet duties and in January 1890 they were assigned to the 'defense mobile'.
