Project history: The first ten vessels of this class were ordered under the 1900 Programme and laid down 1900/1, the second ten under the 1901 Programme and laid down 1901/2. Trials took place 1902/4. They had a higher boiler pressure and more superstructure than the preceding 300 tonnes. The increased boiler pressure enabled most to exceed the designed speed, and the removal of the mainmast improved stability. Arbalète and Mousqueton were used for the French Navy's first experiments with wireless. The class trimmed down by the bow.
Modernizations: 1908, all: mainmast was removed
1915, some survived: - 2 x 1 - 47/40; + 2 x 1 - 47/40 M1885 AA
1916, some survived: - 1 x 1 - 65/50; + 1 x 1 - 75/35 M1897, 1 DCT (6 - 12 DC)
1917, some survived: + 1 x 1 - 8.80
1918, some survived: - 1 DCT
Naval service: Mousquet was sunk by German cruiser Emden off Penang 28.10.1914. Catapulte sank 18.5.1918 after collision with British s/s Warrimoo off Bone.
