Aircraft facilities (fd - 5,600m², ha - 5,292m² / 25,716m³): Flight deck: 200.0x28.0m. Upper hangar: 195x20.8x5.0m, lower hangar: 79.2x15.6x4.4m. There were 2 lifts and no catapults.

Project history: Building of two aircraft carriers was provided by the 1938 programme.
Ships had two hangars, flight deck was shifted to a port side and was equipped with two elevators and nine arrested gears. Basing of 15 fighters and 25 torpedo bombers was supposed. It is interesting to mark, that torpedo bombers should be twin-engined. Length of flight deck was insufficient and island superstructure was disproportionate massive and long.
To beginning of war Joffre was ready on 25% and later broken up on a slipway. The second ship (Painlevé) was only ordered but never begun.
Ship protection: 105mm main belt protected machinery spaces, magazines and petrol tanks, 37mm main deck was connected with its upper edge. Thickness of main deck increased to 70mm over magazines.
