Project history: Sterne was built to mercantile standards for fishery protection duties within the 200-mile economic zone. Construction funds were provided by the ship owners, but the ship was manned by naval personnel. She was equipped with a large infirmary, and featured an active tank stabilisation system. An electrohydraulic drive system coupled to the starboard shaft provided an economical cruise speed of 6.5kts. A second unit was to have been ordered in 1987, but was cancelled.

Modernizations: late 1990s: - DRBN-32 radar; + Furuno, Decca 2690 ARPA radars

Naval service: No significant events.
