Project history: Designed by Quintard, the Onondaga differed from åhe Ericsson monitors in having a normal iron hull though of only 356mm freeboard. There were two Passaic type turrets each armed in the French Navy two 240mm/18 M1864/66 guns, and a large funnel between them. There was a pilot house on the fore turret, the funnel base was armoured, and as in the Ericsson monitors the armour was built up from 25mm or thinner plates. Monitor was sold to France in 1867 and retained her old name.
Ship protection: 140mm armour protected the side, turrets had 279mm sides.
Modernizations: early 1870s: - 2 x 2 - 240/18; + 2 x 2 - 240/18 M1870
Naval service: No significant events.
