Project history: Iron-hulled floating batteries differing from previous classes in having a central casemate with 9 gunports a side and 3 at each end. The battery height was 1.45m (1.32m in service) and there was a single funnel with a light fore and aft rig on two masts.

Ship protection: Sides were protected by 120mm iron with 400mm wood backing on 12mm iron plating at wl, battery had 110mm armour on 400mm wood on 12mm iron plating.

Naval service: Arrogante swamped and sank in squall 19.3.1879 at La Badine, salvaged in May and repaired.
