Project history: The Hoche was a solitary example of a combined turret and barbette ship though the Magenta of the next class was originally designed as a sister ship. The hull was of relatively low freeboard and there was a lowering superstructure amidships which gained her the name of 'Grand Hotel'. The 340mm guns were in fore and aft turrets with their muzzles well above the deckhand the 274mm were in shallow barbettes on the beam with gun axes 8.3m above water. Of the 139mm guns, 14 (later 8) were in a broadside battery at the base of the superstructure and 4 located two decks higher. The two funnels were abreast and there was a military foremast. The Hoche suffered from inadequate stability and in 1898 she was taken in hand for the superstructure to be reduced, and at the same time 16 Belleville boilers and VTE engines were installed and displacement apparently reduced to 10,580 tons full load.
Ship protection: The belt was complete, and amidships tapered from 450mm at the upper edge 0.6m above water to 350mm at the lower edge 1.7m below. It was 300mm aft and 250mm forward where there was a 1.8-1.2m wide thin upper belt and cellulose cofferdam as far as the fore turret. The armour deck of 80mm max iron on 20mm steel was slightly below the top of the belt.
Modernizations: 1898: machinery was replaced by 2 VTE and 16 Belleville boilers, displacement normal was 10580t; - 18 x 1 - 139/28, 2 - 380 TT; + 12 x 1 - 139/45 M1891-93, 4 x 1 - 65/50 M1891
