Project history: Originallv designed as an iron-hulled unit of the Ocean class, the Friedland was much altered during eight years on the stocks. There was a complete waterline belt and six of the 274mm guns were in the battery with ports 10m apart and sills 3.3m above water. The hull was not recessed for axial fire from the battery and the remaining two 274mm guns were in upper deck unarmoured half-barbettes projecting 1.4m from the side. The 139mm guns were originally on the upper deck but were remounted on the battery deck forward of the armour. The hull was compartmented by five watertight bulkheads but there was no double bottom though the sides were double from the turn of the bilge. The spur ram was replaced by the continuation of the inclined stem below water. Metacentric height was a little over 0.9m and the Friedland was originally rigged as a ship, then as a barque and eventually with fore and aft sails on two masts only, the mainmast being removed.
Ship protection: The complete waterline wrought iron belt was 220mm thick. Battery was protected by 160mm sides and 160mm bulkheads. Barbettes were unarmoured.
