Project history: This class of iron-hulled floating batteries were shorter and had more beam than the Arrogante, and differed also in that the battery was continued to the ends. There were 2 gunports at both bow and stern and 6 on either beam with a battery height of 1.4m.

Ship protection: Sides were protected by 140mm iron with 400mm wood backing on 10mm iron plating at wl, battery had 110mm armour on 400mm wood on 10mm iron plating.

Naval service: Protectrice rammed a pier and sank in 1871, later salvaged and repaired.
