Project history: A break with previous designs, the Amiral Duperré was a high freeboard barbette ship. The 340mm barbettes were disposed two abreast forward, one on the centreline amidships and one aft, while the 165mm was in the bows and the 139mm in an unarmoured main deck battery. One of the 340mm failed, probably due to overheated brown powder as the magazines were extremely hot, and she was rearmed with 3 340mm/21cal M1881, retaining one of the former guns. Metacentric height is believed to have been about 0.6m, and originally a full rig was intended. The two funnels were abreast, and she eventually had two masts each with two armed tops. Although the waterline was well protected, she was very vulnerable above and would not have stood much chance against HMS Inflexible.

Ship protection: The complete belt was 560mm amidships with 400mm at the lower edge and a uniform 250mm fore and aft with 150mm over the spur ram. It only extended from 2m below water to 0.5m above and the sides above were unarmoured, while the barbettes, with a gun axis height of 8.5m, were shallow rings of armour only. The armour deck was at the top of the belt and of 60mm steel on 18mm plating, while there were 16 transverse watertight bulkheads and also longitudinals to 15m from bow and stem.

Modernizations: 1890s: - 4 x 1 - 340/18; + 3 x 1 - 340/21 M1881, 4 x 1 - 165/28 M1881, 2 x 1 - 65/50 M1891, 22 x 1 - 47/40 M1885, 18 x 1 - 37/20 M1885

Naval service: No significant events.
