Project history: Screw sectional armoured floating batteries, iron hulls.

Ship protection: 50cm iron armour on 30cm backing protected the waterline, battery was also protected by 50mm armour.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: Nos.1, 2, 4 and 5 were seized by Paris Communards 18.3.1871. No.1 was sunk by Government artillery at Saint-Deniz in April or May 1871, No.4 was scuttled at Saint-Deniz in May 1871. Nos. 2 and 5 were retaken by Government forces in May.
