Project history: Wooden-hulled sloops with iron beams, rigged as barques or barquentines built for French navy. There was a short high forecastle, a pronounced ram bow, overhanging stern and a single tall funnel. One 139mm was on the forecastle and two were amidships on the centreline with the 100mm aft on a raised platform. Inconstant and Papin were sold to Ecuador in 1901.
