Project history: The USSR supplied components for five submarines to be assembled in Chinese shipyards until eventually the Chinese built the entire submarine. A total of twenty-one entered service, 13 built by Kiangnan SY and 8 by Wuhan SY. Obsolete by the 1980s, six had been stricken by 1989, with the remainder either laid up in reserve or serving as stationary harbour training boats.
Modernizations: 1960s, all earlier boats: - 1 x 2 - 25/112
Naval service: No significant events.
