Project history: Mei Yuan was former American river gunboat PR4 Tutuila built in Shanghai. 19.3.1942 she was presented to China. Simultaneously by default also was presented her sister-ship PR3 Wake, captured by Japanese in 1941 and commissioned by IJN as Tatara. She was commissioned by Chinese Navy as Tai Yuan only in 1946.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: Both since 1949 were a part of PRC Navy.
