Project history: Wooden-hulled fully-rigged gunboat. Chen Hai was built for Peyang fleet, Ching Yuan for Nanyang fleet and Chen Wei for Fukien fleet.
Modernizations: 1890, Chen Hai: + 2 x 1 - 121/22 Armstrong 40pdr 1.32-ton BLR
1890, Chang Yuan: - 1 x 1 - 160/16; + 2 x 1 - 121/22 Armstrong 40pdr 1.32-ton BLR
Naval service: Chen Wei was sunk by French ships 23.8.1884 in the battle at Foochow. Chen Hai since 1890s really served as torpedo depot ship. Ching Yuan served as TS since 1890s, after WWI she was converted to survey vessel and was in the fleet list in 1930s.
