Project history: This class utilized an enlarged project 50 hull, with two large diesels (one per shaft) instead of four small ones. They were an attempt to provide an AA escort, something the Chinese Fleet badly needed. However, the SAM system caused many problems and did not become operational until the mid-1980s, after some 20 years of development. Subsequently vessels using the same hull were completed as Ty[e 053H SSM armed frigates.
Modernizations: 1986, Yingtan: + 2 x 2 HQ-61B SAM (24 HQ-61B), 2x type 342 radars
Naval service: No significant events.
