Project history: Originally named Sea Serpent this steel-hulled vessel was laid down in 1887 as a stock boat by J S White and was purchased, rebuilt and strengthened by Armstrong at Elswick between March and September 1894. She was purchased by China but delivery was delayed until June 1895 by the Sino-Japanese war.
She had a ram bow, two pole masts and two funnels side by side abaft the foremast. The two 25pdr Armstrong QFs were mounted fore and aft, with the 3pdr QFs amidships. She had one fixed 356mm bow TT and two centreline twin training mountings on the upper deck amidships. She carried twelve Schwarzkopf torpedoes.
Ship protection: CT had 45mm sides.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: Fei Ting was captured by the joint British-French-German-Russian expedition to drydock at Taku on 17.6.1900.
