Project history: Composite-hulled, fully-rigged sloops, Wei Yuen and Kang Chi being built for the Peiyang fleet and others for the Nanyang fleet.

Naval service: Wei Yuen was disarmed in July 1885 and became TS for midshipmen; she was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese TB23 at Wei-Hai-Wei 5.2.1895. Later she was salvaged, repaired and served till 1906. Kang Chi was captured by Japanese at Wei-Hai-Wei 17.2.1895 but she was disarmed by them and returned to Chinese for repatriation service. Later she was disarmed and fitted with two TT for her new role as a torpedo TS. Teng Ch'ing was sunk by spar TBs from the French cruiser Bayard off Shei-Poo on the night of 14-15.2.1885.
