Project history: Small 2nd
class protected cruisers, ordered simultaneously with two larger ships of Hai Chi
class after the Japanese-Chinese war. They were built in Germany by Vulkan, traditional
shipbuilder of Chinese
Navy. Hai Chen is sometimes transcribed as Hai Shen.
Hull had forecastle, poop and ram-shaped stem. 150mm/40 guns
were placed on characteristic for Chinese ships of the end of XIX century "triangular" scheme: two
aside on forecastle, the third on poop. 105mm and 47mm guns were
installed on an upper deck.
Ship protection: Machinery was protected by 32mm deck with 70mm slopes, turtleback-form deck at ship ends had 25mm thickness. 150mm guns were protected by 51mm shields.
Modernizations: 1930s, all: + 1 x 1 - 40/39 2pdr QF Mk II
Naval service: All three cruisers by 1937 were deduced from fleet list and 11.8.1937 were scuttled on river Yangtze at Jiangyin for fairway barrage.
