Project history: The ex-RN cruiser Aurora was sold to China, fetched by a crew of 682, and defected to the Communists in Shanghai on 2 March 1949
Protection: Armoured belt protected machinery spaces (57mm armour on 13mm plating) and extended to upper deck abreast boiler rooms and fore engine room and to main deck abreast aft engine room. Machinery and steering gear also were protected by 25mm armoured deck. Magazines were covered by 76mm longitudinal and 76mm transverse bulkheads and 51mm crowns.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: The Nationalists aviation bombed the Chung King at Taku some days and 20.3.1949 Nationalists bombers finally sank her. Later the wreck was salvaged but the repair was recognized as too expensive. Later the hull was used as accommodation and warehouse hulk and finally was scrapped in 1990s.
