Project history: Two submarines ordered in 1980 from the HDW yard at Kiel to the enlarged and improved Type 209 design, Type 209/1400. Two more were projected in 1988, but the plans were dropped. Have sail and masting 0.5m higher than the other ships of this class to cope with wave size off Chilean coasts.

Modernizations: 1991-1992, both: + Sinbad CCS
