Project history: One of well-known "Elswick" cruisers built by Armstrong in the end of XIX century. Design of P. Watts. She was laid down in August, 1892 at the initiative of builder for sale to foreign customer, in November of the same year she was gained by Chilean Government for 333.500£ and named Blanco Encalada.
Rather successful design, served as a prototype for Argentinean cruiser Buenos Aires, Chinese Hai Chi, Chilean Esmeralda (ii).
Flush-decked hull with ram stem. Differed by very strong armament.

Ship protection: Complete protective deck was 44mm at flat part and had 102mm slopes abreast machinery and 76mm slopes at ship ends.
