Project history: Were originally to have been steel-hulled mine-countermeasures and training ships, but later primarily intended for offshore patrol duties. Built to commercial standards, but naval standards were applied to stability, maneuverability, and magazines. Were to be able to maintain 15kts in State 2 sea, but can only achieve 14kts under optimum conditions; they are not considered to be good seaboats. Trials with the first unit showed the ships to be top-heavy, and 9t of permanent ballast were added, and some equipment was relocated. All have degaussing coil arrays fitted, but there is a control system in only the first three. Planned bow thrusters omitted. Have a large radar signature. Using modular systems, are capable of route survey work in support of mine countermeasures and are able to carry a remote-controlled drone submersible for examining undersea objects. Two MacDonald Dettwiler modular minesweeping systems, four modular route survey systems, and one remotely controlled inspection submersible module have been procured, with the latter using the Trailblazer 25 ROV. Two mechanical mine-sweeping arrays are kept at Halifax for towing by units of this class.

Modernizations: 2009-2010, all: - Kelvin-Hughes Nucleus 6000 radar; + ability to carry K-Ster USV, Sperry Bridgemaster-E radar

Naval service: No significant events.
