Project history: First boat of the Type 1400 (enlarged version of the Type 209) ordered in 1984 from German yard. Originally five more (two of them to the improved design) were to be ordered from Arsenal de Marinha for a total of six boats in service by the end of the 1990s. However only three were built in Brazil.

Modernizations: 2008, Tapajó; 2010, Timbira; 2013, Tupi; 2015, Tamoio: - Mk 24 Tigerfish torpedoes, DR 3000U ECM suite, KAFS A10 CCS; + Mk 48 Mod.6 torpedoes, DR 4000 ECM suite, BYG-501 Mod.1 CCS

Naval service: No significant events.
