Project history: Laid down for Italian Navy as Neghelli, Gondar and Ascianghi, sold to Brazil 10.3.1937 being outfitted. Medium submarines of so-called "600t" type (4th series). Single-hulled, with bulges. Boats were accepted by Brazilian crews at La Spezia 10.10.1937, arrived Rio de Janeiro 14.3.1938. Hull numbers were T1-3.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: Tupi was damaged 14.12.1938 by battery explosion. Timbira 8.10.1943 was wrongly attacked by aircraft, received air bomb hit to CT, lost some person, including commander.
