Project history: Submarine cruiser, ordered in 1925 on the means obtained from sale of battleship Deodoro to Mexico. Improved variant of Italian Balilla class. Twin-hulled. For endurance increase two 425hp Fiat auxiliary diesels-generators were installed for battery recharging. Submarine was arranged by folding bow diving planes. Besides torpedoes, Humaitá carried 16 Ansaldo mines, placing in two horizontal tubes at aft end. 120mm/41 gun originally took place in rotating turret in front of a fin, but soon after commission was rearranged to deck. Building of Humaitá has been ended in the late 1927, but submarine was remained on the shipyard on one and a half year because of a protraction of ultimate payment by Brazilian party.
