Project history: Originally referred to as the ASS (Aviation Support Ship) and intended to replace the vertical assault capability lost with the disposal of the carriers Hermes and Bulwark. Now referred to as an LPH. Formally ordered 1.9.1993. Cost was £150.6 million. The hull was built to merchant vessel standards by Kvaerner at Govan. Does not have command and control facilities for a flag or Royal Marine brigade staff. Can not transport heavy armored vehicles and is handicapped by low speed.
The ship in general resembles an Invincible (and has a similar underwater hull form), but with a full-length flight deck and no ski jump. Four LCVP Mk 5 landing craft, each capable of carrying 35 troops and 2 tons of equipment, are carried in side embrasures. Brown Brothers folding-fin stabilizers are fitted. There is a small stern ramp for light vehicles; 40 half-ton trucks, 34 trailers, and six 105-mm towed guns can be carried. In an emergency, 303 additional troops can be carried, for a total of 803. There are 17 weapon and ammunition magazines, totaling 180 tons capacity. The main engines themselves must be stopped and reversed in rotation to provide astern power.
The flight deck has six spots for Sea King-size helicopters and can also accommodate Chinook helicopters. Later ship received ability to carry Merlin and Apache helicopters. The principal employment with Sea Harriers would be as a transport; there are no support facilities for the aircraft. The hangar can accommodate up to 12 Merlin or 12 Sea King HC.4 and six Lynx or Apache (since 2008) helicopters and is divided into three sections by fire curtains. Flight deck freeboard is 15.3 m, and flight deck dimensions are 170x31.7 m. There are two 19t aircraft elevators, and a vehicle ramp reaches the flight deck on the starboard side aft, connecting it also with 47.5x23.3m vehicle area. Hangar dimensions are 111.3x21.0x6.2m. Standard airgroup consists 12 Merlin HC.3 and 6 Lynx AH.7 helicopters.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
