Project history: 10-ships Pará class was ordered by Yarrow under the 1907 programme. Intended for operation together with Baia class cruisers. On construction they were very close to British River class, differing by strengthened artillery. On trials all ships exceeded 27kts contract speed, fastest Paraná shown 28.736kts. Ships differed by excellent manoeuvrability: tactical diameter on full speed was about 340m, and time to a stop at full astern from full ahead was about 30s.
