Project history: The first pair was ordered late 1987 to a design by Vosper QAF, Singapore, with actual work beginning late in 1988. The second pair was ordered in 1990 and the third pair in 1993. The fourth pair was ordered in 1994 and paid for from profits from the state-owned Petrobras oil company. The original contract with Estaleiros Maua for P 42 and P 43 was canceled in 1992 due to slow progress, and the craft ordered there were fitted out at the Arsenal de Marinha. The craft have been renumbered to reflect the delivery sequence; P 42 and P 43 were originally to have been P 40 and P 41. Have a 10-person-capacity rigid inflatable inspection boat on the stern, handled by a telescoping electrohydraulic crane.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
