Project history: Small wooden-hulled river monitors built during Paraguayan war.

Ship protection: Complete wrought iron belt was 0.9m high and was 102mm amidships, tapered to 76-51mm at ship ends. Curved upper deck was 13mm thick.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: Santa Catharina foundered at her moorings in 1882 due to the poor hull condition while she was under repair.
