Project history: Despite the limited size and capabilities of the Belgian shipbuilding industry, the government made procurement conditional on Belgian participation in Wielingen-class design and construction. Costs were kept to a minimum by providing only those features essential to the escort mission in the North Sea/English Channel area. Only weapons systems in service with other NATO navies were considered, and particular stress was laid on seaworthiness, watertight integrity and automation. The major weapons systems, except SAM, were of French origin, while the Netherlands provided radars and CCS. Under the terms of contract the Belgian shipyards were responsible for the hull and machinery, whereas the installation and testing of the weapons systems was the responsibbility of the Belgian Navy.
Modernizations: 1998-2006, all survived: - Raytheon TM1645/9X radar, 2x Panda e/o systems, SQS-505A sonar; + 6 x 1 - 12.7/90, type 1007, Scout radars, 2x Vigy e/o systems, SQS-510 sonar
Naval service: No significant events.
