Project history: The executive committee of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, the Marine-sektion, agreed with foreign navies in their estimate of the high value of a modern type armoured cruiser which could perform some of a battleship's duties. In addition the success of the two light cruisers of the Kaiserin Elisabeth class persuaded the authorities to build an improved successor with more displacement, heavier armament and heavier armour. Five British yards were asked to tender designs: Cammell Laird, Vickers-Armstrong, Fairfield, Napier (Glasgow) and Thomson. However, eventually the first ship, officially designated as 'torpedo-ram-cruiser C' was ordered at STT to give work to the Austrian yard personnel.
Kaiserin und Königin Maria Theresia was originally planned with six 15cm and fourteen 47mm, but the number of guns was increased during construction.
Ship protection: The belt was 100mm. Main guns barbettes had up to 100mm protection, 15cm guns were protected by 80mm casemates. There was 60-40mm protective deck. CT had 50mm sides.
Modernizations: 1910: - 2 x 1 - 238/32, 4 x 1 - 47/30; + 2 x 1 - 190/40 G. L/42, 4 x 1 - 37/42 C.1900V
Naval service: She was disarmed 31.1.1917, decommissioned 7.2.1917 and served as an accommodation ship for German submarine crews. Her guns were transferred to the Italian front.
