Project history: In August 1950 plans for six Type 12 frigates were announced, but subsequently the number was cut to four; No 5 and No 6 were later reordered to a modified design. They incorporated all the improvements of the RN Rothesay class, and in addition had MRS 3 fire control and Dutch Signaal LW-02 air warning radar. The second pair had the forecastle deck extended aft to the stern, providing additional accommodation. Stuart was the first to be fitted with the Ikara ASW system, which replaced one of the Limbo Mk 10 mortars aft, and Derwent was the first RAN ship to receive the Seacat GWS22 missile system in lieu of the twin 40mm Bofors.
