Project history: In response to claims by the C-in-C that the Germans were building large destroyers the Board decided in June 1916 that the next 26 destroyers should be repeats of the 'V class leaders. Triple TT were suggested by the DNO but vetoed by Controller to avoid delays. However decks were to be made strong enough to take triple tubes. Bridges were strengthened in response to criticism from the Fleet, with canvas screens replaced by steel plating. All were ordered between June and August 1916. As completed they resembled the 'V' leaders closely, but without the compass platform ahead of the searchlight platform amidships. In January 1917 orders were given to complete Vehement, Venturous, Vanoc and Vanquisher as minelayers, with rails for 60 'H' or 'M Sinker' mines. Subsequently Vimiera, Velox, Versatile, Vesper, Vittoria and Vortigern were altered in similar fashion. From 1920 onwards all except the minelayers were rearmed with triple TT (the minelayers retained the after twin TT, making them 5-tube boats). Vectis and Vortigern had typical White ribbed funnels, while Verdun, Versatile and Verulam had prominent caging on their funnel-tops. Viceroy and Viscount had tall flat-sided second funnels.
