Project history: The class provides air defense against missiles and aircraft for friendly ships, land forces, and coastal infrastructure. Intended to replace the Charles F. Adams-class guided-missile destroyers and to ensure air-defense capabilities through the first half of the 21st century. In 2007 the Australian government announced that the Navantia-designed F-100 had been selected as the basis for the Hobart-class Air Warfare Destroyers. ASC Shipbuilder Pty Ltd. was selected as the shipyard for building the ships, and Raytheon, Australia was selected as the combat systems engineer. The AN/SPY-1D(v) provides aircraft and missile defense coverage at ranges in excess of 150km. At least 1 helicopter may be carried. Improvements over the F-100 class include increased diesel power and efficiency providing increased range; bow thrusters for increased littoral maneuverability; funnel top enhancements to improve "air wake", and increased bunk size to improve habitability. A Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) is fitted and the Mk 45 127mm gun is capable of firing Extended Range Munitions. Undersea capabilities are improved over the F-100 program with the addition of a torpedo defense system, improved ASW decoys for torpedo defense, expanded underwater communications capabilities, and integration of the lightweight MU 90 torpedo. Improved antiship-missile defense capabilities and upgrades to the surface-to-surface missile system are also called for to improve target selectivity in congested littoral and coastal waters. There are plans to arm ships with Standard SM-3 and Tomahawk missiles.
4th ship, 45 Melbourne, was cancelled 15.3.2009 for financial reasons.
