Project history: Armoured shallow-draught gunboats, original "argument" of Argentina in dispute on internal river borders with Brazil and Uruguay. Intended for patrol on frontier rivers Parana and Uruguay and supports of troops ashore in case of the conflict. Competition on building, declared by Argentina government in 1905, was benefited by Armstrong, the contract was concluded in June, 1907. Cost of one ship was 81445£
Gunboats had hull with a forecastle and a poop and ram. Freeboard height amidships was 2m. On trials Parana made 15kts, Rosario 15.25kts.
Ship protection: Protection was ensured by Krupp-steel belt, covering only machinery and closed by 38mm bulkheads; magazines were protected by 51mm nickel-steel armour.
Modernizations: early 1930s, both: + 2 x 1 - 40/39 2pdr QF Mk II
late 1940s, both: + 2 x 1 - 40/39 Mk VIII
Naval service: No significant events.
