Project history: Ships were built in the Great Britain under the 1926 programme. They have inherited names of ships of the 1907 programme, built in France (Mendoza and La Rioja) or Germany (Tucuman) and requisitioned with the WWI beginning. The order was given out in 1927. Structurally they repeated British leader Scott. Armament and fire control system were similar to Churucca. On 6hr trials Mendoza and Tucuman reached 38kts, La Rioja shown 39.4kts.
Ships have arrived to Argentina in November, 1929, and Tucuman and La Rioja have made 5800nm passage from Lisbon to Puerto Belgrano without calls to other ports.

In 1952 ships were re-rated as destroyer escorts.

Modernizations: late 1940s, all: - 1 x 1 - 120/45, 1 x 1 - 76/45; + 3 x 2 - 40/60 Mk 1

Naval service: La Rioja and Tucumán were disarmed and placed in reserve in 1952.
