Project history: Coast defence battleships with low freeboard, capable to operate on large rivers. Libertad was laid down as 9 de Julio, renamed during construction. Since 1931 ships were rated as armoured gunboats.

Ship protection: Main 203mm belt had 1.5m hight and protect a citadel, it was closed by 203mm fwd and 152mm aft bulkheads.

Modernizations: (1925-1927), both: wer converted to oil-firing (2800hp, 14kts, 170t of oil, 2100(7)nm); - 2 - 450 TT

1930s, both: - 4 x 1 - 47/42; + 4 x 1 - 40/39 2pdr QF Mk II

Naval service: In the time of WWII ships were used as hulks and depot ships, but were in commission till the end of war. Libertad after being stricken was used till 1968 as pilot hulk Interseccion.
