Project history: Low-freeboard monitors with all-hull-long narrow superstructure. To decreasing of target area in the battle ships can to receive ballast into double bottom tanks, increasing a draught by 2m.
Ship protection: The belt over the machinery and magazine was 152mm thick and 1.5m high (0.9m above and 0.6m below wl), reducing to 102mm at ship ends. Funnel casing was 114mm. There was 203mm breastwork round the turret. The area round gunports was protected by 229mm iron plates, rest parts of turret had 203mm protection.
Modernizations: 1883, both: - 1 x 2 - 254/13; + 1 x 2 - 203/30 Armstrong E, 2 x 1 - 57/40 Hotchkiss, 4 x 1 - 25/42 Nordenfelt
1890s, both: + 2 x 1 - 120/40 Armstrong P
Naval service: No significant events.
