Project history: Small battery ship with a ram bow, short forecastle and poop. Steel hull had double bottom and was sheathed in wood and zinc. Six 203mm guns were in the battery, four fired ahead, two astern. One 203mm gun was installed at the bow and one at the stern.
Ship protection: Main belt under battery was 229mm above and 152mm below waterline, reducing from 90mm to 38mm at ship ends. It extended from 1.2m below wl to 0.9m above. There were 190-140mm thick bulkheads. Battery was protected by 152mm upper and 203mm lower belts. The deck above battery was 16mm-thick, lower deck at ship ends had 38-32mm thickness.
Modernizations: (1897-1898, F C de la Mediterranée, La Seyne, France): artillery was completely replaced by 10 x 1 - 150/50 Canet M1896, 6 x 1 - 120/50 Canet M1896, 2 x 1 - 47/40 Hotchkiss, 2 - 450 TT (beam)
Naval service: No significant events.
